About the Songs

Selma - A song I would call "historical fiction." I was born in Selma, and the history is true, although the story has been changed somewhat. I played this first in Atlanta, home of Dr. Martin Luther King, and then shortly after in Texas, not long after the horrible dragging death of James Byrd in that state.

Angel on My Shoulder - Yes, this song is about a tattoo...but a very magical one for me. My angel and I are are certainly life partners....listen to the song for the story.

Holes - The counter part to "Angel." I was sitting in a restaurant in Atlanta with a friend. The waitress that night had her tongure pierced recently, and her attempts to talk to us while playing with her stud inspired this song about body piercings...it's all in good fun, of course.

Tell Me - My own questions about how one recovers from a very painful loss of love. Partial lyrics:"Oh Mother Mary, did you think it was going to come to this--when you lay on your bed, and the Spirit gave you that Holy Kiss? Did you ever conceive your son might be hanging on a tree, and you'd be broken and crying here for all the world to see? You never really love if you always stop to count the cost, but how do you keep your heart open when your staring at what you've lost. Won't you tell me, you're standing there all alone....I know you love him still, but, is love enough to move the stone?"

Power Over Me - A bluesy torch song, with great harp by Mickey Miklejohn. Has a double entendre or two.

I Still Remember the Nights - A thanks and a goodbye to a relationship...produced Nashville style.

This Feeling - Written in New Orleans after watching a man and a woman fall in love "one dollar bill at a time." Men don't talk much (at least he didn't) but he sure was telling her he loved her....more great harp.

To The Children - A song for all the kids who learn loss too quickly because of divorce...written for my own.

Times We Never Had - All songwriters have a song about love lost....this is about a love that never quite got started.

Spread Your Wings - A song for my oldest as she left for college. I realized there were things I wanted to tell her, and there were things she needed to hear....and that those were not the same things at all. I tried to write this one to say what every kid needs to hear when they are leaving home.

Never Apologize - One should never apologize for love. Enough said.
